“EXHALE” is Ida Retz Wessberg’s first gallery exhibition after she graduated from The School of Sculpture Charlottenborg, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2018. She has exhibited at Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art and Kunsthal Charlottenborg, among other places.

Ida Retz Wessberg has a critical and historical approach to sculpture, working with themes such as body, gender and immateriality. Retz Wessberg uses traditional sculptural plaster, as well as modern industrial materials such as air bubble wrap or textile clothing.  Retz Wessberg is concerned with how the history and perceived values of materials, as well as their internal hierarchies, affect the way the audience encounters sculpture. She has a particular interest in air.

She has produced numerous sculptures and casts from puffer jackets.and bubble wrap. She examines the volume of the jacket, constituted by the encapsulated air held in rectangular compartments, as a contemporary uniform, concealing the unique body or gender of the individual wearing it. The air bubble wrap illustrates the invisible material that people often take for granted (air) as well as pointing on the fact that all living existences are connected, by the same need of air, to survive.

Retz Wessberg has invited the artists Tina Maria Nielsen and Nils Elvebakk Skalegård to contribute with artworks for this exhibition. Common for all the artworks is their relation to Sculptural tradition and Art History, while at the same time the reflection on contemporary themes. This also shows in the choice of materials which range from traditional sculptural materials as plaster and stoneware to air bubble wrap and plastic beads.
